CENTOVALLI RAILWAY

A Scenic Journey from Domodossola to Locarno

Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes

The Centovalli Railway, also known as the Vigezzo Valley Railway, is a narrow-gauge railway that winds its way for 52 km from Domodossola to Locarno. For an hour and a half, you will travel through a wild and romantic landscape of vertiginous bridges, streams, vineyards, chestnut woods and villages perched on hillsides.

Domodossola, a town in Ossola with an ancient market square, a medieval historic center and characteristic stone houses, is the starting point for a journey through an alpine landscape across the Italian Valle Vigezzo and the Swiss Centovalli.

The route, which reaches an altitude of 800 meters, offers glimpses of rural life and beautiful views of the mountains. It is an opportunity to observe the different villages from the window: Santa Maria Maggiore with the parish church of the whole valley dedicated to the Virgin Mary and with an interesting small Museum of Chimney Sweeps, Re with the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sangue.

The Vigezzo Valley, renowned as the valley of painters and chimney sweeps, leads into the narrow Centovalli where the river winds its way through deep gorges. Locarno, in the Canton Ticino and the arrival station, is a charming town on Lake Maggiore with a beautiful lakeside promenade, the famous Piazza Grande, home to the international film festival in August and a characteristic old town with narrow streets, a beautiful rococo-style church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and a Visconti castle that houses an archaeological museum inside.
