ITINERARY CH30
Staying in Bettmeralp, a beautiful Alpine resort entirely free of cars, means waking up in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is an idyllic base for exploring the Aletsch Arena, with its panoramic trekking trails and constant views of Europe's largest glacier.
Here is what awaits you:
- The enchantment of the Aletsch Arena and Bettmeralp: With your pass, you can travel for free on the cable cars throughout the entire area. You will comfortably ascend from Betten Talstation to Bettmeralp, a beautiful and characteristic car-free Alpine village. From there, the mountain lifts will take you to the most spectacular viewpoints, such as the Bettmerhorn, to admire up close the immense river of ice of the Aletsch Glacier (the largest in the Alps).
- Choosing Bettmeralp as your overnight base is an extraordinary experience. Accessible only by cable car, this car-free village allows you to disconnect completely from the hustle and bustle of daily life. You will find yourself immersed in the silence of high-altitude nature, directly overlooking Europe's most majestic glaciers.
- The legend of the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat: The pass also includes the train journey to Zermatt and the thrilling ride aboard the historic Gornergrat cog railway (up to an altitude of 3,089 meters). You will arrive right in front of the perfect pyramid of the Matterhorn, surrounded by a crown of snow-capped peaks and millenary glaciers that will feel almost close enough to touch.
Day 1: Arrival in Brig and ascent to Bettmeralp
Your journey begins in Brig, a historic Alpine rail hub. From here, you will immediately catch the local train and cable car up to Bettmeralp, a beautiful and sunny Alpine resort entirely free of cars, where you will stay for the duration of the tour.
Once you arrive on the high plateau and check into your hotel, you will enjoy a free afternoon to explore this picturesque village, strolling among traditional wooden chalets and taking in your first glimpses of the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in Europe.
Conclude your day up in the mountains in Bettmeralp, where we recommend savoring local culinary specialties, such as raclette or fondue, in a cozy regional restaurant.
Day 2: Discovering the Aletsch Arena (Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn)
After breakfast at the hotel, dedicate the entire day to exploring the trails of the Aletsch Arena, starting directly on foot from your accommodation. Using the included mountain lifts, you can reach the area's highest viewpoints, such as the Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn viewpoints, to admire the immense and majestic curve of the glacier from above.
This will be the perfect day for rejuvenating high-altitude walks and easy panoramic hikes in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site, walking just a step away from ancient ice. In the evening, return to your hotel in Bettmeralp for your second overnight stay.
Day 3: Aletsch vistas or optional excursion to Zermatt and departure
Dedicate the morning to a final stroll through the alpine pastures of Bettmeralp, before taking the cable car back down to the valley for your return journey.
Optional Zermatt Excursion: If you wish, the efficiency of your pass allows you to use this final day for an optional day trip to Zermatt. Leaving Bettmeralp early in the morning, you can take the train to the famous car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn and ride the historic Gornergrat cog railway (3,089 m) to admire the iconic rock pyramid before your final departure from Brig.
