Highlights

The route boasts an impressive 196 viaducts and bridges, with several standing out for their beauty and daring engineering:

  • Brusio Circular Viaduct: A unique spiral structure that allows the train to overcome a significant altitude difference in a confined space, offering a spectacular 360-degree view.
  • Landwasser Viaduct: An iconic seven-arch construction that curves directly into a rock tunnel.

Beyond these, the journey includes 55 tunnels and numerous switchbacks, ingeniously designed to help the train conquer extreme gradients without the need for cogwheels. This makes the Rhaetian Railway the highest narrow-gauge railway in Europe with free transit (meaning, it operates without cogwheels on steep sections).
